(The early bird doesn’t always get the worm (or ID) … When we visited the yard of Tom Brown on June 18, 2021, a plant was mis-identified initially. The late-birds, who hung around, learned them name of this late-bloomer … limber caper (Caqpparis flexuosa).

After the plant auction, the limber caper had opened confirming its ID. Its fragrant white flowers open in the early evening and are though to be moth-pollinated.
Limber caper prefers full sun but also will grow in hammock shade as shown below in a photo taken on Prange Island, an Indian River County conservation property …

The flowers close up in the early morning ….

Limber caper has a sprawling habit especially in shadier conditions. Limber caper is related to Jamaica caper (Capparis jamaicensis). We have seen this shrub in many yards that we have visited, including the yard of Marta & Mike Kendrick …

Jamaica caper flowers pinker in the afternoon. In full sun it makes a wonderful well-shaped shrub. Limber caper, with its larger, lovely white flowers and flexible, sprwaling habit, also can be a wonderful addition to your landscape.
