St. Sebastian River Conservation Lands

At our January 15, 2024 meeting Tim Glover, President of Friends of the St. Sebastian River, gave a presentation on the conservation lands and plans regarding the St. Sebastian River corridor. Tim’s main emphasis was on the recently acquired South Prong Preserve. The SPP encompasses about 40 acres of land that abut the north and south sides of Route 510 (85th St.). The headwaters of the St. Sebastian River flow into the southernmost portion of the property. Preserving the property in a natural state will help assure that those lands function as a buffer between agricultural lands and/or future residential development and the St. Sebastian River. Aerial footage shots gave the attendees a good picture of how preserving these lands will fit into the St. Sebastian River Greenway proposed in 2006. If you are interested in assisting in clean-up projects at the SPP, particularly invasive plant removal, contact Tim.

In the South Prong Preserve a narrow upstream branch of the St. Sebastian River flows slowly in the background. Native foreground plants: wild coffee (Psychotria nervosa), cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto), shoestring fern (Vittaria lineata), leather fern (Acrostichum danaeifolium).
